Coffee Through History

Coffee is a beloved beverage consumed by millions of people worldwide every day. However, its history goes far beyond our daily caffeine fix. Coffee has played a crucial role in shaping the world as we know it today. From its origins in Ethiopia to its spread across the world, coffee has left a significant impact on human history.

The story of coffee dates back to the 10th century in Ethiopia. According to legend, a goat herder named Kaldi noticed that his goats became more energetic after eating the red berries of a certain plant. Curious, Kaldi tried the berries himself and discovered that they had a stimulating effect. He shared this discovery with the local monks, who then began using the berries to make a drink that helped them stay awake during long prayer sessions.

Spread of Coffee

The popularity of coffee soon spread beyond Ethiopia, and by the 16th century, coffee had made its way to the Arabian Peninsula. The Arabians were the first to cultivate coffee on a large scale and began exporting it to other parts of the world. The port city of Mocha, in Yemen, became a major center of coffee trade, and the term “mocha” is still used today to describe a type of coffee.

As coffee spread across Europe in the 17th century, it became a symbol of the Enlightenment. Coffee houses became popular meeting places for intellectuals, writers, and artists who would gather to discuss politics, literature, and philosophy over a cup of coffee. These coffee houses played a crucial role in the dissemination of new ideas and helped shape the cultural landscape of Europe.

Coffee played a vital role in the Industrial Revolution, which began in the late 18th century. The caffeine in coffee helped workers stay alert during long shifts, making them more productive. Coffee also became an important commodity in the global economy, with countries like Brazil and Colombia becoming major exporters of coffee.

The 20th century saw coffee become a global phenomenon. The rise of coffee chains like Starbucks and Costa Coffee transformed the way we consume coffee, turning it into a social experience. Coffee also became a symbol of globalization, with coffee shops appearing in cities all over the world.

The Power of a Joe

Coffee’s role in history is a testament to its power to shape culture and society. From its origins in Ethiopia to its global spread, coffee has left an indelible mark on human history. Today, coffee continues to be an important part of our daily lives and remains a symbol of community and connection.

Coffee in Asia

Coffee has been an integral part of many cultures in Asia for centuries. Although the beverage is said to have originated in Ethiopia, coffee’s popularity in Asia has been on the rise, with several countries producing some of the best coffee in the world.

In Asia, coffee drinking is not just a morning ritual; it is a way of life. Countries like Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand are known for their unique coffee blends and brewing techniques, while Japan and South Korea have also embraced the coffee culture with a passion.

The Grounds on the Ground

Indonesia, for instance, is the fourth largest coffee producer in the world, with a diverse range of coffee varieties grown on its fertile soil. The most famous coffee grown in Indonesia is the Kopi Luwak, which is produced by feeding coffee cherries to a civet cat and then collecting their feces. Although the process may sound unappetizing, the end product is a highly sought-after coffee with a distinct flavor and aroma.

Vietnam, on the other hand, is known for its strong and bold Robusta coffee, which is favored by coffee enthusiasts for its low acidity and bitterness. Vietnamese coffee is typically brewed using a phin filter and served with sweetened condensed milk, giving it a unique taste and texture.

Thailand’s coffee scene has also been on the rise, with the country’s northern regions producing some of the best Arabica coffee beans in the world. Coffee shops in Thailand often offer a variety of brewing methods, including the traditional Thai-style coffee, which is brewed with a muslin cloth and served with condensed milk.

In Japan, coffee has become a part of everyday life, with coffee shops and cafes lining the streets of major cities. The country’s coffee culture is deeply rooted in tradition, with many coffee shops serving specialty drinks like the pour-over and siphon coffee, brewed using traditional methods that require skill and precision.

South Korea’s coffee culture is also rapidly growing, with the country boasting some of the most unique and trendy coffee shops in Asia. The country’s coffee shops are known for their elaborate decor, creative latte art, and specialty drinks like the dalgona coffee, which gained international fame during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Asia Coffee Scene

In conclusion, coffee has become a cultural phenomenon in Asia, with each country adding its unique touch to the brewing and consumption of the beverage. Whether you are a coffee enthusiast or just looking to try something new, Asia’s coffee scene has something for everyone.

Coffee Grounds in the Ground

Your morning coffee is probably great at starting your day with all the energy you need to stay awake. Not many people know, but coffee is also great at giving your plants the energy they need as well to grow healthier, faster, and stronger. Coffee grounds will work for both indoor plants and outdoor plants!

Healthy Grounds

Coffee grounds work as a multitool for any garden! They can help plants get more nutrients, remove pests, and fertilize the soil! Coffee grounds, as with all foods, become compost which helps make the soil more nutrient dense to give your plants a boost. Coffee grounds introduce more nitrogen into the soil which helps plants absorb water and other crucial nutrients better!

How Plants Like Their Coffee

Both indoor and outdoor plants can benefit from a java boost, but that doesn’t mean you can take a one-size-fits-all approach to coffee in your garden. For best results, use the type of grounds that best suit your plants. While both indoor and outdoor plants can get a boost from coffee grounds, it’s important to use a carefully researched routine to best cater to your plant’s needs. Make sure to brew your coffee first before you use them for compost as brewing the coffee removes all of the acidity. The pH level in the soil isn’t affected and it is an important point that should be remembered.

However, some plants like rhododendrons, azaleas, and hydrangeas grow better in more acidic soil so roasting your coffee beans rather than brewing them is better for compost for these plants.

Which Plants Aren’t Coffee Lovers

Be careful with which plants you decide to use coffee grounds with as not all plants are suitable. Most plants that grow food like corn, and berry plants should not have coffee grounds in their growing process. Coffee grounds can also hamper seed growth in the soil affected by it.

Food & Drink

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and if your morning drink is a warm, or cold, cup of coffee, you should try some of these delicious foods to pair!

Avocado Toast

Avocado Toast is a perfect pairing for a cup of coffee! It’s tangy and savory taste mixed with crispy bacon match amazingly with full-bodied coffees with fruity notes. It’s an easy-to-craft meal that’ll have you up and ready for your day, or night even! You can even try out this pairing at The Coffee Class. Our Avocado Toast is made with smashed avocado, onion jam, bacon bits, tomato, and micro greens, and topped with a crispy multigrain toast. It’s always made fresh!

Fruits

Another healthy pairing with your morning coffee is fruit, specifically berries. Coffees hailing from Kenya and Yemen pair well with the tartness of many berries. These coffees compliment the taste of the berries very well and will give you that extra energy boost that you’ll need to start your day.

Pastries

Starting off your day with an iced latte? Try pairing it with a soft warm pastry to compliment the bold taste! This classic pairing is popular throughout many cafes and easy to make at home. The Coffee Class serves a numerous variety of pastries like seasonal scones, handmade poptarts, scones, cupcakes, brownies, croissants, strawberry croissants, almond croissants, and more in our pastry display!

Salty Foods

Feeling bold? Salty foods offer a unique experience when it comes to pairing them with a cup of coffee. Salty foods intensify the taste of the coffee and bring out more of its rich flavor. Coffees from Costa Rica are the best for this pairing. Salted sweets are the best way to start diving into this experience!

Mix & Match

Overall, there are many ways to experience your coffee by mixing flavors and finding the best ones for you! Whether it’s breakfast or lunch, lots of foods go well with your cup of coffee. Try experimenting with our menu and see what you like!
Leave the Latte, Take the Cappuccino

In the underground world of criminal organizations, having an edge on information can mean the difference between being able to spend ill-gotten gains, or having to spend a decade behind bars. But rather than bribes or other unscrupulous means of persuasion, mafia bosses in Italy just opened up a cafe.

An Offer They Can’t Refuse

Seems a bit strange right? Consider the phrases pillow talk, water cooler talk, bar talk, and cafe talk. People like to talk, especially when doing something mundane! We discuss this in a previous blog post here. Understanding this, mafia leaders in Italy decided to open up a coffee shop directly inside the courthouse where their own were being prosecuted!

He Knows a Guy and a Cafe

Prosecutors, lawyers, and even police officers shared intimate details of mafia-related cases with the staff at the cafe. Most of them being only prompted with casual conversation. There was no need for bribes, threats, blackmail, or violence. Just a happy smile, a cup of warm coffee, and of course, recording devices in every corner. Such a seemingly innocent plan sure brewed up tons of trouble for Italian authorities. Thus, it became clear that years and years of case building against top crime figures in the country may have already been compromised. It’s not clear how much information was collected by the illegal entities, but it was enough to warrant the closure of the cafe shop.

Would you like to know more?

As you may have guessed, it has a lot in common with a gin and tonic, and the only real difference is the presence of espresso, which substitutes the gin. With only a few simple ingredients – ice, about 6 ounces of tonic water, and two shots of espresso – this beverage can be made almost anywhere, and quite quickly. However, the availability of this drink really comes down to if the place you’re at has tonic water, but if you’re feeling adventurous, any type of sparkling water works well enough. To make one yourself, simply pour the tonic water into a glass of ice, pour the two espresso shots on top, and give it a nice stir.

Another option is a Guillermo; a drink that may sound off-putting but has a loyal fanbase. The ingredients of this beverage vary slightly, but it mostly comes down to if you want it hot or iced. An iced Guillermo consists of one to two lime wedges in a small glass of ice topped with two shots of espresso, while a hot one just leaves out the ice; the iced variant is far more popular. While this may sound strange, the extra, citrusy acidity does a lot to bring out the acidity of the espresso. Chances are, you’ll be able to get this drink at nearly any restaurant with a bar, as espresso and lime are common cocktail ingredients.

This next drink has as many names as there are grains of sand at a beach; the undertow, John Wayne, espresso shooter, breve blaster, and so on. You’ll find in your travels that some locations call it one thing, and others call it something completely different; if you’re chosen name isn’t recognized, it isn’t difficult to describe the drink. The beverage itself is one of the more complex ones on this list, as it does involve layering. It is made by pouring two ounces of cold half and half into a small glass and is usually accompanied by vanilla flavored syrup. Next, two shots of espresso are pulled over a bar spoon with the hope of them forming a layer on top of the half and half. Once finished, the drink is meant to be taken like a shot, but because the amount of liquid exceeds that of a standard shot, taking a few consecutive swigs is common. This drink is unique primarily because of the layers, which coat the tongue in the sweet half and half, and the roof of the mouth with the warm espresso; there is really nothing like it.
